Waarom crematie?

Crematie is in Thailand en zeker in Isan de meest voorkomende vorm van lijkbezorging.
Toch zie je hier uitzonderlijk ook begrafenissen plaatsvinden. Het gaat dan meestal om mensen overleden ten gevolge van een ongeval of om jonge kinderen die, met weinig ceremonie, worden begraven.

Over wat de mogelijkheden zijn met het stoffelijk overschot van in Thailand overleden buitenlanders vind ik weer geen informatie van de Thaise overheid.
Een duidelijk standpunt staat op de website van de Nederlandse ambassade.

De naaste familie (in Thailand of in Nederland) bepaalt in principe wat er met het stoffelijk overschot dient te gebeuren. De familie kan besluiten tot een crematie of begrafenis in Nederland, of een crematie in Thailand. In Thailand is een begrafenis in de regel niet mogelijk.
Door de hoge kosten voor het overbrengen van een stoffelijk overschot van Thailand naar Nederland is een crematie of begrafenis in Nederland relatief duur (circa Euro 3,500.=). Deze kosten worden over het algemeen door een reis- en ongevallen verzekering gedekt. Als de overledene voor deze kosten niet verzekerd is, dan is de naaste familie (in Thailand of in Nederland) verantwoordelijk voor de kosten van de crematie of begrafenis ...

Funeral Options
Following the death of a foreign national in Thailand, the NOK must decide whether to:

1. repatriate the deceased to the UK or
   
2. have a local cremation and the ashes repatriated to the UK or
   
3. have a local cremation and the ashes scattered in Thailand.

If the deceased was covered by travel insurance, it is important that NOK contact the insurance company without delay. It is also worth noting that, if the deceased was travelling with a tour operator, that operator can be a valuable source of assistance and advice. If a local burial or cremation takes place, there may be no coroner’s inquest carried out in your home country.
Repatriation The repatriation option can be a very expensive procedure and most (if not all) embassies are not able to contribute, although they will provide facilitation services. In some circumstances repatriation may not be possible. Your embassy will advise if this is the case.
If the NOK do not live in their home country, note that international iuneral directors can organise repatriations to most countries in the world.
Local Cremation Cremation is the norm in Thailand and is carried out at a wat (temple). In the major cities and resorts the crematoria are basic but enclosed. In parts of Northern Thailand, cremations may take place on a funeral pyre in the open air. If the NOK choose to have a local cremation and wish to take the ashes back to the UK themselves, they can do so with minimal bureaucracy.
Local Burial As Thailand is a Buddhist country, burials take place very rarely – normally only for foreigners or non-Buddhist minorities. They can be very expensive and often difficult to organise. It is generally advised that, if the NOK wish to have the deceased buried, they should consider having the body repatriated and the funeral take place in their home country or place of residence. Wat onze familie moet, en de overige lezers mogen, weten is dat Phan een aantal jaren geleden besloot haar stoffelijk overschot ter beschikking van de wetenschap te stellen. Ze meldde zich hiervoor aan bij het Srinagarind Hospital in Khon Kaen omdat ze daar, nu ruim 10 jaar geleden, succesvol geopereerd, behandeld en genezen werd. De documenten hiervoor werden door de kinderen mee ondertekend, er is een extra contactpersoon hier in de buurt, en ze heeft een kaartje op zak. Ik heb begrepen dat het ziekenhuis, eens het zover is, de conservering van het lichaam op zich neemt maar de familie de nodige tijd laat om de rituelen te laten verlopen alvorens het lichaam over te nemen.
We vroegen het ziekenhuis destijds of ze ook interesse hadden in het lichaam van buitenlanders en dat bleek niet zo te zijn. Voor mij was om volledig volgens de lokale gebruiken gecremeerd te worden dan ook een logische en gemakkelijke keuze.
